For Authorized Ministers and Members in Discernment

Since April 2021, all Members in Discernment (MID) and authorized ministers in the New York Conference can satisfy their Boundary Awareness Training (BAT) requirement from the comfort of their own homes. BAT sessions are offered throughout the year, via Zoom. Some associations may still offer a few in-person BAT sessions. Please contact your association Registrar for information on any in-person trainings. If you have questions regarding your BAT requirements, please contact your association Committee on Ministry.

We offer Basic BAT for those who have never taken BAT before. Basic BAT lasts 5 hours, which is usually spread over two weeknights. It involves reading Saying No to Say Yes, by Olsen and Devor in preparation for the training and includes an overview areas where pastoral boundaries come into play and a discussion of the Ministerial Code. The associations in the New York Conference accept this Basic training to meet the three year requirement. Then, after three years, Refresher BAT sessions provide ministers with the resource to meet their ongoing requirement for BAT training.

The New York Conference also has a curriculum designed to meet the specific needs of retired ministers who are still engaged in occasional ministry tasks like pulpit supply, weddings, and funerals. Retiree BAT sessions last 5 hours. For currently retired ministers, Retiree BAT training will fulfill your association’s boundary awareness requirement. Those who have exempt status do not need to take BAT.

Refresher BAT sessions last 5 ½ to 6 hours. Participants will need to be present for the entire training session(s) to receive completion credit.  Timing of breaks and ultimate training duration will be contingent upon number of participants and is at the sole discretion of the facilitator. Participants must participate with a camera-enabled device and the camera must remain on during the entire training session.  No phone only participation is permitted. Upon registration, Zoom log in information will be provided.  Please log in a few minutes before the training start time to ensure a timely start. Upon completion of the training, Certificates of Completion will be sent to Association Registrars and to participants.
