Process Overview
A step-by-step guide for congregations seeking a new pastor — from forming
your search committee to celebrating your new pastor’s installation.
Phase 1
Transition & Preparation
Secure pulpit coverage, supply preacher, or bridge pastor for the transition period.
Association Registrars have pulpit supply lists.
Form a Search or Transition Committee.
Meet with your local ACM or Search and Call Associate to learn the scope
of the process and discern if an Intentional Interim Pastor is needed.
Secure an Intentional Interim Pastor or bridge pastor if needed.
Phase 2
Congregational Discernment
Be introduced to the Congregational Welcoming Diversity Inventory via PowerPoint.
Complete the Congregational Welcoming Diversity Inventory.
Meet with Rev. Gary Ferner and other team members to discuss the results.
Phase 3
Church Profile & Posting
Begin work on the Local Church Profile through the Local Church Profile Portal.
Discern a general budget for the next pastor, using the UCCNY Conference Guidelines.
Have the Local Church Profile validated by the local ACM.
Post the Local Church Profile to the UCC Ministry Opportunities system.
Phase 4
Interviewing & Candidating
Interview prospective candidates.
Narrow choices down to 2 or 3 finalists.
Invite one or two candidates to preach in a neutral pulpit if necessary.
With many pastors having sermons online, this step may not be needed.
Pick a final candidate to preach a candidating sermon.
Phase 5
Extending the Call & Installation
Prepare a Call Agreement. Ensure your chosen candidate agrees with it and will sign after the vote.
Sample Call Agreement available via the ACM.
Hold a congregational vote on the candidate.
Have your called pastor sign the Call Agreement.
Welcome your new pastor!
Connect with your Association leadership, Committee on Ministry, and ACM to schedule the installation. Set a date where all leadership, COM reps, and your ACM can attend.
