UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST My Thoughts Biases. We all have them. But that doesn’t mean we have to let them rule our lives. I’ve been thinking lately about how our biases are a lot like the suckers that grow from tomato plants: if left unchecked, they choke and crowd the plant, and can prevent the plant from bearing as much fruit as possible. Suckers grow from the spaces between the stem and a branch, and they look like they belong there. Biases grow in the spaces between our life experiences and our fears, and they are hardly noticeable, most of the time. Suckers sap energy from the main plant, taking nutrients and water so they may grow. Biases sap energy from our spirits, taking energy and emotion so they may grow. Suckers obscure the fruit growing from the main branches, blocking out light and interfering with ripening. Biases obscure the fruit of the spirit growing in us, blocking out truth and interfering with our relationships. The cure for taming suckers on a tomato plant is pruning. Pinching off or pruning the suckers stimulates growth in the main plant, causing it to produce even more fruit and even better fruit than if the suckers were left to grow on their own. The cure for taming our biases is pruning. Recognizing our biases, and the way they interfere with our producing fruits of the spirit is the first step. Pruning our biases away will not only restore more energy to our spirits, it will also allow us to grow more fully in the spirit. Biases develop just as naturally as suckers on a tomato plant. Every person has them, just like every tomato plant develops suckers. But just because they grow, doesn’t mean we have to let them affect our ability to bear fruit. We are deep into the growing season this summer; let’s not forget that for some plants, it is also pruning time. Blessings, Rev. Gary Ferner Rev. Gary E.
