UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST My Thoughts Walkin’ with Grief Have you ever had moments where you feel like you are walking around with grief pulling at your ankles or tied around your neck? Grief has a way of drawing down our hearts and even tugging down on our souls. How do you deal with Grief in your life? For some reason, the last small chapter of my life has been full of grief. I have lost a friend and a family member in the last few weeks, along with waiting, from afar, for a mentor to leave the pain of a silent disease. Grief has a deep loneliness and sadness has a longing for what was or what could have been. Rev Dr. John Dorhauer, General Minister and President of the UCC, when preaching at our recent annual meeting quoted singer Van Morrison from his song “I’m Not Feeling it Anymore” as he reminds “Have to get back, have to get back the base.” This challenge to “Get back to the base” has had me thinking- What is my base? What do I do to ground myself? Where do I need to go dip into that refreshment that cools the parched places of my soul? My simple answer is Hope. Hope is the dancing partner of Grief in the greatest of lives- Hope brings us back from the sorrow of Grief. Hope picks us up when Grief lets us down. Hope grounds us to the source of God’s creation force when Grief wakes us up in early mornings and midnight peace putting the question “Why” on our lips. When I think of hope- the music that plays in my mind is by Natalie Sleeth-“A Hymn of Promise” “From the past will come the future What it holds, a mystery Unrevealed until its season Something God alone can see” A prayer: May you get back to the base As you seek Hope more than Grief And faith more than sorrow May your tomorrows be full of mystery As they are revealed in God’s time In the greatest of Hope. Amen ~ Rev Ryan W Henderson Rev Ryan W Henderson Associate Conference Minister New York Conference, United Church of Christ   REMEMBRANCE During the Annual Meeting, we took time to pause, reflect, and remember all of those who we hold dear to us that have transitioned in the last year or more. It is important for us all to allow for space to mourn, and to know that we are not alone in our moments of sorrow. If you feel you need a helping hand in grieving/mental health wellness, please email: sestilley@uccny.org From First Congregational Church: Celebrating the Life of Shirley Reinhardt   NY UCC Conference Connection What’s Happening at Your Local Church? ~ New York Conference Happenings now delivered on Fridays! ~ Have your church happenings included and shared throughout the New York Conference. This will be your opportunity to share your ideas, thoughts, hopes and dreams for the future of our conference. Where are we headed? What are the challenges before us?
