United Church of Christ of Stanfordville has Built an Ark
Saturday, December 19, 2015
The United Church of Christ of Stanfordville has built an ark! The church is thrilled to announce that it has raised $5,000.00 to give an ark through Heifer International. Heifer International is a non-profit organization “working to eradicate poverty and hunger through sustainable, values-based holistic community development.” What's included with an ark? The gift of an ark includes 2 cows, 2 sheep, 2 oxen, 2 water buffalo, 2 pigs, 2 beehives, 2 goats, 2 donkeys, 2 trios of ducks, 2 trios of rabbits, 2 trios of guinea pigs, 2 flocks of geese, 2 flocks of chicks, 2 llamas and 2 schools of fish. The animals will be sent to Honduras, China, Uganda, the Philippines, Senegal, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Kenya, Bangladesh, Ghana, Ecuador, Cambodia, Zimbabwe, Peru and Vietnam.
These animals are given to farmers and families in under developed countries where they become both a source of food and a source of income, as products such as milk, eggs and honey that can be traded or sold at market. The truly exciting part is the core of the Heifer model: Passing on the Gift. This means families who receive animals from Heifer share the training they receive, and pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family. This extends the impact of the original gift exponentially. Heifer is providing sustainability and self-reliance because short-term fixes don't solve long-term problems. This is the reason the United Church of Christ in Stanfordville is so excited to support this incredible organization in this way.
Various church groups held events to reach the goal of $5,000.00, including the church’s youth group JAM (Jesus and Me), the Sunday School, and the Women’s Fellowship. “This is a great accomplishment for our church,” said Pastor Rhoda Starzyk. “It took two and a half years, and the entire congregation, but we are so grateful to be able to share this gift. The UCC of Stanfordville is very excited to be able to donate an ark in order to answer God’s call to help others in need.”
“For I was hungry and you gave me food….‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you…and Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me.” Matthew 25: 35a; 37; 40
Philippians 2:4 “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
