Clergy Sign-On to Raise the Age
Wednesday, May 11, 2016
New York State is one of only two states in the nation that automatically prosecutes all youth as adults when they turn 16. Approximately 50,000 16- and 17- year olds are arrested and face the possibility of prosecution as adults in criminal court each year - the vast majority for minor crimes. Youths incarcerated in adult facilities are more likely to suffer physical and emotional abuse and to recidivate. They are 36 times more likely to commit suicide in an adult facility than in a juvenile facility. The NYS Council of Churches is circulating a sign-on letter for clergy to legislative leaders to end this harmful practice. Click here to add your name
